COMPLETION OF THE CATHEDRAL.
The Diocesan Synod last evening, by resolution, noted with pleasure the Bishop's appointment of the Rev. C. R. Pollock to snake a vigorous efiort to raise the sum stiil required to complete the Cathedral! Colonel Slater and Canon Pascoe both bore highYestimony to Mr Pollock's qualifications for the work, and we heartily join in the"general hope expressed that this fresh effort ta finish the Cathedral may be crowned with complete success. For the credit of the community at large, and for the adornment of our own city, the building whose beautiful proportions are sadly marred by its present unfinished condition; ought to be carried out to the complete fulfilment of Sir Gilbert Scott's original design. And is not thie a debt which ie-.owing to the founders of the province— not merely I>y members of the Anglican communion, but by all who have benefited, by their labours and their foresight? Probably we shall never fully realise all the bentfite we have derived from tie high stamp of men and women by whom this settlement was first founded, and the wisdom end foresight-wittr vhich they laid out fehe cjty and , provided it with means of recreation, of religious instruction and worship, and of education. It is well-known that Canterbury was founded as a Church of England settleiaent, and that the .erection^of a»-cathedral was one of the objects distinctly contemplated by the Canterbury Association. Jfo better, memorial of our rounders could be set up, and no better evidence of bur 5 gratitude for what they have done for us could 'be given than would be afforded by completing the great work on which they had set their hearts. On these grounds- alone, and because the completed cathedral would be such an adornment fco the city, and a credit to tbie province, we venture to commend the movement to the support of our readers- That many wilj be inspired by even, higher motives to give it their help we do not for 6ne moment doubt.
