ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
Mr James Fleming, a farmer at Amberiey, met, with rather' a serious accident yesterday. was driving home" from the sales at Amberiey, and it must be surmised that he- was thrown from his - trap while turning one oft&e corners, and dragged L some distance along the road. He was found lying near.Sadler**'Bridge, with his head severely cut. Dri Fiteherbert was called in, and! attended to the-injuries. A tbirteen-months child, named William Schaski was found dead in a cot at its parent's house, Papanui, on Saturday evening. At an' inquest field yesterday it was ascertained that the. deceased child had been put to bed with another child, and* during the temporary absence of the mother, by Some means managed to get smothered in the bedclothes. Tbe jury returned a verdict that the. child met its death by being accidentatty, smothered. • - ' - A'young Indian, named Louie Jetua. employed as cook by Mr John Hammond, of Rata, near Hunterville, committed suicide last week, by shooting himself in the head with a gun. Deceased and another coolie were brought to the colony- about three yean ago by Dr. Wilson, of Palmerston North, Quite a seimation was caused- in'that town by an action brought by the Indian huls against Dr. Wilson for alleged ill-treatment. A libel action arose out of theprooeedings. The lads have been with Mr Hammond for about a couple of .years. -Deceased, who was about twenty years of age;' fell in love with a .white eirl at Rata, who reciprocated his .affection, but,her father would not consent to ber ; marrying tha Indian.., This dis- ■ appointment of. his hopes, was the • only ground'ascribed for. the, suicide.. At the inquest a verdict of "Suicide while in a state of unsound mind" .was returned. The adjourned ipquest touching the. death, of the young' girl Isabella Gordon, which was to have be—i held yesterday afternoon, at the Asbbnrton (>wrthouse, has been further adjouraed to Monday, November 4th, on account of tb» illness of one of the jurors.
