SANTOS DUMONT AND HIS AIRSHIP.

A SUCCESSFUL .

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. '' (Received October 21st, 9.4 a.m.) . PARIS, October 20. M. Santos Dumont, the daring aeronaut, ascended in his airebjp from the Pare d'Aerostation, land easily rounded the Eiffel Tower, at'a .height of 250 metres. 'He regained the point of departure in 1755 seconds, while the second attempt covered 1340 seconds. While returning he encountered a strong wind. The AerolOlub.Committee decided that M. Santos Dumont had failed to win the Deutsch prize by 44 seconds. M. Deutsch,.'personally, considered M. Dumont had won. - . Crowds who witnessed the ascent showered flowers on M. Dumont oh bis return to earth,, and gave bira a great ovation. ' The airship in which M. Santos-Dumont made has gallant attempt to win M. Deutaoh's £4000' prize is a new one, his last flyingmachine having been wrecked in a previous attempt. Insteadof being cigar-shaped, like „its predecessors, the new airship has the form of an ellipsoid, the. object being to keep the balloon from collapsing under the pressure of a strong head wind. This was the- fate of the balloon in which Santos-Dumont made em attempt to win the prize a month or so af(o. Though a few yards longer than the ruined air&hdp, which was Santos-Dumont's fifth, tb* new one is somewhat lighter in construction. It is a trifle over 36 yards ia length and about 64 yards in diameter at its widest part Suspended by steel wires beneath the balloon is a sort of cradle about 20 yards long, .and composed of. pine poles secured together at the ends. Within this era die js the powerful. four-cyHiider motor which drives the airship. The screw itself is in a triangular cradle, which is suspended from the centre cradle. It is at the opposite .end. that the aeronaut sits in has small basket and, controls the valves and rudder. The new petroleum motor,, which is a four-cylin-der one, weighs nearly 2001b, has a force of 20-horse power. A new feature which il is hoped will prevent what has been a fruitful source of annoyance in the past is a reservoir containing water for cooling the motor. The balloon contains 600 cable yards ef hydrogen, marmf-ctured by ..M. Santos-Du-mont himself.
