The City C*-____ met hut night, when the Mayor.presided. There were also present—Crs. Gray, Samuels, Clark, Taylor, Simpson, Payling, Macdonald, Morris, Loughnan, Sorenseu, J. T. Smith. Tha receipts were stated as being -£2175 8s 2d, accounts passed for payment £1564 15s 2d, debit balance. £12,761 7a. The Mayor said the Special Committee had gone into the Special Bill which was to bo brought before tbe Howe. The Committee thought that two or three Oounrilions should wait on the Premier at Wellington and ask him to take up the Bill. The Eecc ption Committee had met that day, and it was satisfactory to be able to state that if the Council paid £1050 or 22 per cent, less then asked for at first as its c-ontribution, tbey would toe able to pay. off. toe accounts on the r_ceipt of that and the contributions on tha same scale by the suburban boroughs, Mr DobsoD bad prepared the plans for the destr_ctor house, and it was for the Council to say whether they should be considered by tbe Council or go'before the _peci_l Committee. A letter was read from M_~rs Garrick, Cowlishaw, and Fisher, stating 'that in the case of the City Surveyor against Taylor they were so dissatiefied with tho judgment of the Justices in the matter -that they had asked for a statement of the case for appeal, and asked for instructions. Mr Dobson explained that on the strength of paying 15s, Mr Taylor had dug up the "cart crossing, and had taken away a number of pitches. He (the City Surveyor) had charged him under the by-law with having taken away the property of ths Council. Cr. Loughnan moved "That the solicitors be instructed to appeal." Cr. Morris seconded the motion. Cr. Payling moved as an amendment, "That the matter b-a referred to the By-Jaw Committee to consider and report." Cr. Simpson seconded ths amendmont, which was carried.

Messrs Vogan and Co., wrote with reference to the night-soil cxmrraot, stating that tliey would require an incraased sum owing to the inoreased numbsr of houses. Tlis letter was received, ancl tli* ari_nge_ient made br the chairman of the Sanitary Committee for carrying on as at present for one month agreed to.

'Mr 'L. Mnnro called attention to the fact that in a trial of the fire engine in St. Asaph street the hose had been turned on to the and also on to the veran_ahs of his house. His little boy had also bean knocked down and had been taken to the hospital. The letter was referred to the Fire Bri-rade Committee.

Steele's apr/.ication to include the bank on Oxford terrace in his title urr-der the Land Transfer Act be not granted.

Sorensen seconded the motion, which was notratived.

With regard to the abattoirs, Cr. Smith moved—""That the Special should, on receipt of the plans from Wellington, be authorise- to instruct the architect to prepare spec_ic__o_s and call for tenders.

The Works C*c___Tttee reported recommending that the Council insure all tlie staff and employees against accident in the New Zej_lan_ GWenunent Office. Permission hadDsen given to Mr T. Anstey to sink a well and establish a -water service at the Antigua street boat sheds. The report was received and adopted. Cr. Tavlor drew the attention of the Sanitary Committee to the diagracaful state of the pubbo urinals, (particularly on Saturday and Monday nights last those in front of Inglis's Buildings and the Shamrock Hotel. He moved—"That the Works t>__tti*tee take steps to procure proper and more up-4~-_ate lavatories for the city of {_f____»l x __ U rc_-" Ck. -fcrensen seconded the motion, which waa carried, The City Surveyor pointed out that what was wanted was an improvement in their system of Council then adjc_rned for a week.
