GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKETS.

*-, (BY OT7R CQUU&RCIXL EDITOIt.) * Tuesday Evening. I The latest mail news from America re- ; garding th* -growing crops was, on the ' whole, favourable, it is not yet known whether the -spring wheat area is larger than hist year or not, but it is not expected that there will be an increase, as the , tendency is to put more land into maize '■■ and flax, especially in Southern Dakota and Minnesota. The condition of the wheat : crop in Germany, according to recent cable advice, is still very bad, and it is antiei- j pated that some 12,000,000 quarters will ! have to be imported, which is about double j the quantity usually required. The trial shipments oi wheat in bulk that j have been arranged to go from Sydney to ; Liverpool by the White Star steamers, j amount, says the "Australasian," to 2000 \ tons, of whsch tho Suevic takes 1000 tons i and the Persic will take 1000 tons, on© hold being occupied in each case. The latter shipment is consigned by the Farmers and Settlors' Association of New South Wales to the Manchester Wholesale So- ,

ciety. The local wheat market is quiet, and with very little offering. During tie past few days tiers has been some excitement in the oats market, with the result that large quantities have been, purchased on the basis of our to-day's quotations. Buyers seem to have now supplied their immediate wants, and it is generally thought that the market will steady again. The steamer St. George sailed for Durban last week with 128,81/ small bags (257,634 bushels) of oats, loaded at Oamaru, Timaru, and Lyttelton by Messrs A. H. Turnbull and (Jo. Tihe steamer Magdala is now at Oamam, loading oats for SoUtli Africa for Messrs Q. G. Stead and Co. and Friedlander Bros. She will also call at Tinrani, and then complete her cargo at Lyttelton. Our Southland correspondent writes: — "This oats market has been brisk during the w?ek, the buyers being the holders of orders far South Ali'icn. but as they are offering a fixed price tfosre has been no rise in the market. The present price is Is 2d, sacks 5d extra, at country stations. According to present appearances South Africa will take <ill the oats ooming to •band for some little time. The ruling pnlces very njuch restrict business wrbh Australia, and evidently they do not take our oats unless they can get them at low rates. The shipments of oats coastwise for the week were 5000 sacks, but there are two large steamers, the Romford and AngloAustralian, at the Bluff, and they will each 'take about 100,000 -small bags for South Alrica "

The potato market has again advanced, and it is said tihat speculators are operating freely in the country districts, 'l'lie only orders coining to hand are for coastai shipment, principally to Auckland. The local market is now over £1 above the parity of Sydney values, and thierefore no fresh business can be done in that direction, the shipm&nta to Sydmey now baing c-f purchases that were m£i»de before the late risa took place, or of seed potatoes.
