THE QUESTION OF HOLIDAYS.
The movement in favour of making Saturday, June 22nd, a holiday, as well as-Mon-day, June 24th, has b.en very largely supported by the business people of the city. ' A notification has been arranged- to be ad- I rertised to the effect that a number of the j principal firms intend closing their premises ci; Saturday. Amongst the firms represented are: —Drapers—W. Strange and Co., Bailout*.-* and Co., and Toneycliffe and Carey ; ironmongers—Recce and Sons, Ashby Bergh and Co., Aitken and Roberts, Mason, Sl.rut2-.eT__, and Co., axtd W. Congreve; grocers—Wardell Bros., T.^-H. Papps, F. A. Cook, G. Piercy and Co.. T. Taylor, Farmers Co.-op.. Working Men's Co.-op. ; furniture trade—A- J- Waite and Co.. In addition, several of the auctioneers have decided to held their sales on l'riday instead of Saturday, and it ia probable that a general movement to clcse on baturday will bu agreed to. At the City Council last night, the Mayor raid i_iat the question of holidays -was in a very ur.snt:s£actory slats. had bee*, appointed b/ a body and asked to request th. citizens to decs at certain timss. Now, however, there appeared to be a disinclination tc take, up tlio position which the scct.rn. of th* Employers' Association had asked them to request, the Mayor to do. Wh:a he proclaimed a holiday it was not incumbent on tho citizens to obey it. He ' tl.i_.pht it would bs far better if some respon.lb'.e body wera appointed who could approa'h tha Mayor. Cr. Taylor said ho understood that ,a sect/on of *t".i3 Employers' Association hid communicatrd with hi". Worship, and that upon this h* had proclaimed the holiday. His Werrhip said that this was so. H3 understood that the deputation waiting upon him represented ths retailers, and acting upon that he had asked the citizens to close as requested.
