ASHBURTON COUNTY COUNCIL

The Ashburton County Council met yesterday. Present—Messrs C. J. Harper (chairman), S. S. Chapman, J. Johnston, J. Lambio, W. Morgan, E. G. Wright, and H. Friedlander.

The Council decided to offer a bonus of £10 for the best and most suitable plough for water-race cleaning. A public trial will be held in connection therewith.

He pointed out that the funds standing to the credit of this account was £1111 17s Bd, and the settlers were entitled to a reduction. Mr Chapman seconded the motion. Mr Wright moved as an amendment that the matter be held in abeyance pending the completion of the Ruapuna Avater supply system. He considered that if the proposed expenditure of £1200 on repairs to. the Ruapuna water supply head works Avas not sufficient to effect "the repairs, it would be only a fair thing to use a portion of the accumulated funds for the purpose. Accounts amounting to £529 6s 2d were passed' for payment. It was resolved to close the Council's offices on June 24th in honour of the Royal visit.

The annual accounts as audited were laid on the table, and ordered to be printed. The Chairman pointed out that the auditor still refused to pass the account for £50, contributed towards the Indian Famine Fund.

Deputations representing settlers in the Anama Road Board district waited on the "Council in connection with a petition presented prayin.g_ that a portion of the Rangitata Road Board district, recently annexed to the Anama Road Board district, be now cut off and re-annexed to the Rafegitata district. The petition was received, and Messrs Morgan, Still, Wright and Johnston were appointed a Cammittee to verify the signatures to the petition and to report at the next meeting.
