CANTERBURY TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL.
At the ordinary meeting of the above Council the president (Mr J. A. McCullough) An application was reosdved from the Canterbury Sawmillers and Timber Yard Employees , Union desiring affiliation to the Council,, and stating ifc had elected delegates to represent the Union on the Council. The delegates were accorded a hearty welcome. The Metal Workers' Assistants and Grocers' Unions also wrote requesting affiliation, which was granted.", ■ ' " . The GhristchuTcli Hairdressers requested financial assistance should the employers decide to appeal against the decision of the Arbitration Court on the question of its jurisdiction in the hairdressers' dispute. The secretary was instructed to communicate with the Unions of the colony and the Trades Councils should necessity* arise- for the purpose of raising funds for the assistance of this Union. The Executive was instructed to take the necessary steps to celebrate Labour Day, which will be held on the second Wednesday in October, 9th It was reported that Mr W. Williams had expressed his intention of resigning his position on the Conciliation Board, and tie secretary was instructed to convey to Mr Williams the workers' appreciation of his services. The following "resolution will be forwarded to the Minister of Railways:'— "That the Council regrets that workmen employed in the Railway Workshops are forced to work forty-eight hours in any week before receiving: overtime rates, and appeals to the Minister of Eailways to remedy this abuse, and take whatever steps are necessary to yie tbst in w> far as overtime is concerned every d'iy stands by itself, and thus bring th\j workmen in Railway Workshops on equal wage? and conditions w."th those employed by private employers." y , -
