HARNESSING THE WAIMAKARIRI.
At the City Council meeting last evening. Cr. Clarke moved that the n_nes of Messrs Geo. A. Booth, A. W. Beaven. R. if. Mac-doni-kt. R. L. Scott, and T. K. Taylor, be added to the special committee set up by the Council to consider and report on the harnessing of the Waimakariri. In doing so he desired to throw no aspersion on the existing committee, but merely to assist it in the public interest. Cr. Prudhoe .seconded pro forma., but thought it better to take no step till after the j>*_-lie meeting to be held in a few days. Crs. Appleby, Cooper, and Smith, expressed similar views. Crs. Loughnan and Sorensen agreed that it would be"well to obtain the assistance of experts, but did not believe in adding other names. Cr. Samuels said If fhev wanted experts they sliould get them. They- wanted engineers, not auctioneers, as experts in this mattes-. and he would like to know what Mr T. E. Taylor knew about the matter? Cr. Appleby moved as an amendment that Messrs Booth. Beaven. Macdonald. and Scott be added to the committee. His only reason for omitting Mr Taylor was that the la.tter was mot an expert. Cr. Samuels seconded, and the amendment was carried, a further amendment proposed by Cr. P—ldhoe, that the matter be _held over being lost. A
