ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES-
On Saturday Frank Powell, son of Mr F. Powell, of Saltwater Creek, a boy not fifteen ye-ars of age. met with a faial acci-tl-.tit. A horsa „_ was riding bolted from near Mr Brown's store at Sefton, and in t timing a corner of the road fell, and threw Powell on tho ground, causing concussion of tho brain. The lad died within a short time. It appears thi-.t the horse, which bolted, had been stiuck by .1 young man named Hanna. PowellTiad some castings in both Lands, and the reins over bis arm. An imiuest was held by Mr A. B. Blackott, J.P. for Rangiora. at Sefton. on Monday, Mr A. McLean being foreman of tho jury. M.' Helniore, solicitor, appeared for Hugh Hrr.iiii. the youth who struck the horse. After hearing evidence the jury decided — "That Powell came to his death by accident, and the horsy was struck without malicious intention." Ilunria was called in, and ad-dre.-sed by th. acting Coroner on the thoughtlessness of his act in hitting the iieise with a whip, which apparently caused it to bolt. Mrs Mary Henry, of Temuka. died suddenly on January I2th. An inquest was mibsequently held* the jury rttunung a verdict in accordance with the evidence, that death resulted from natural causes. (PBESS ASSOCIATION TKI—GHAMS.) AUCKLAND. January 21. The body of a ruau. name unknown, was found floating in the harbour this morning. It had evidently been in the water for about 11 week. The three years' o'd son of the Rev. C. C. Harrison, of tlie Helping Hand Mission. v..it accidentally drowned in the river at W_-kworth. NELSON. January 21. The young mm Ward, who was injured by a fall of eurth at a quarry on Friday, died on Saturday. He received, several injuries, any of which were sul__ieiit to cause death. At the inquest a verdict of "Accidental death" wasl returned. GISBORNE. January 21. John McMahon, aged 30, a single man, while out eel fishing near Karaka, last evening, was drowned in a creek. He is supposed to have had a fit.
