LABOUR LEGISLATION FOR SOUTH AFRICA.
THE VICTORIAN TRADES HALL
TAKES ACTION.
(Received January 20th. 5.10 p.m.) SYDNEY, January 20.
Mr Seddon has received a letter from the Premier of Victoria enclosing a suggestion from the Trades Hall that the Imperial Government should bs requested to take steps to legislate in the Orange and Transvall colonies regulating labour. Natal and the Cape Colony have legislation on the lines of New Zealand.
Mr Seddon intends to consult his colleagues with a view of giving effect to the request. The Trades Hall desires the prohibition of forced labour amongst natives, the prohibition of the importation of Asiatics or contract labour from abroad, and the prohibition of intoxicants amongst the natives.
