MINING NEWS.

According to a private letter, recently received from the Coast, Mr A. Magnus, dredgemaster of the Leviathan Gold Dredging Company's dredge, has received intimation that it is intended to appoint another to his position, the apparent cause beting that Mr Magnus, acting in the best interests of the shareholders, and with the concurrence of the local director, Mr Druce, substituted Jones's tables for the ones previously in use on the Idredge. The previous tables, constructed to deal especially with the wash found on the claim, were found to be ineffective, as the wash could not be evenly distributed on them, the wash remaining on the first two tables, the others having only water. With Jones's tables it is found possible to distribute the wash evenly over the whole of the tables: indeed, with the new tables it is anticipated that good prospects will be obtained in the tailings of the area already dredged. There appears little doubt that gold was lost with the old tables which will be saved by Jones's. \A*hen the dredge commences operations, as soon as the new tables are fixed, and the elevator put right, it will be about three weeks before she gets into the solid wash. The "Grey River Art/us" says:—Mr McCormack, of the New Elver dredge, succeeds Mr Magnus on the Leviathan dredge. The return from the Nelson Creek Company's dredge, says the "AA'est Coast Times," although not officially made known, is reported to be slightly over 40oz of gold. Should this return be confirmed all dredging shares in this iocality wall experience a considerable rise in value.

The Lake Mahinapua dredge, says the "Grey River Argus, is working very smoothly The directors of the Woodstock Gold Dredging Company have, says the "West Coast Times," accepted tbe tender of Messrs Lucas Bros., of Christchurch, for machinery and elevators at a satisfactory price, to be completed within ten aud a half months. Plans and specifications for the pontoons are ready and the engineer has been instructed to invite tenders for their construction immediately. The Blackball mine has required more water to fill it than was anticipated at first, says the "Grey River Argus." Tho late rains have gone a great way towards extinguishing the fire, but more is still wanted. The water has now filled all the lower part of the mine and reached the seat of the fire, which would appear to be at the back of the mine. Once the seat of the fire ia submerged only a very few days will be necessary before' the workings can once more be cjened up.
