NOTES AND MEMORANDA.

To-night the Christchureh Amateur Operatic Society will produce the opera of "H.M.S. Pinafore." Looking to the absence of opera for some time as an entertainment in our midst, and the fact that the cast is an exceedingly strong one, there should be a large audience to-night at the Theatre Royal on the occasion of the initial performance. All the parts have been very effectively cast, and the chorus and orchestra is both strong and efficient. The rehearsals have gone smoothly, and there is every probability of a really good performance of the opera. Mr A. Gates has purchased the draught j stallion Longbeach from Mr Cormack for I Rangiora and the surrounding districts. The matron of the school for deaf mutes, Sumner, acknowledges the receipt of parcels of lollies for the children from Meedames Kincaid and Recce, flags from Mr J. D. Watson, Christmas cards and medals from Mr Hill, and garden seeds from Mrs Davis. On Friday next an important sale of vehicles belonging to Mr T. White, coach builder, Rangiora, will be held by Mr Tutton. As will be seen by a notification elsewhere the Lincoln College sports, postponed from Saturday last, -will take place on Saturday next. It is notified elsewhere that owing to the condition of the ground tie poJo season will not open on Saturday next as previously advertised. The Christchurch Golf Club have been invited to send a team to play a match with the Wellington Club on Monday. The local men would leave on Saturday night and retusn by Monday night's boat. Members wiUimg to go ere requested to notify the hon. secretary, Dr. Graham Campbell. before Thursday. The final rehearsal of the Diocesan Choral Association takes place to-night, in the Cathedral.
