A meeting of the Genera. Committee of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association -was _*__ yesterday afternoon. Mr Geo. Jameson, presid*ent, ocoupied the chair, and there was a large attendance. Each member should take a certain district, and', particularly in the country, the result ought to be very successful. From the secretary of the Southland Agricultural and Pastorai Association, calling attention to the formation of a combination of implement manufacturers, and asking what action th© Association was taking. From Mr Gerard, Snowdon, asking , whether the rams in the merino cup competition could be kept free from wool-blindnes-.by having the wool clipped round the eyes when necessary. From Mr Wachs man, offering suggestions m connection, with blood stock andf cob exhibits. These were four in number, viz.:—(1). The show rings' being used for sheep at night should be denned up on the morning of the* show. (2). That the rings being grass, that part traversed by the horse 3 when going round should be lightly covered with tan, to pre vent slipping, especially if the show day -should be wet. (3). That in the cob harness -lasses, exhibitora be notified that in nc case can they exhibit their cobs in sulkies. (4). With reference to Mr Mnrohisona letter, it was received, as was also that of Mr Pemberton. On the subject mooted in the letter of the Southland Association, it vras resolved that the Association did not see any necessity for taking action. Tlie letter of Mr Gerard was referred to the Merino Cup Committee, and the Secretary was requested to reply to Mr Gerard that the wool would be shorn from the eyes of the rams as aaifed. Several of the snggesUons of Mr Waschman were reported as having been dealt with. The suggestion as to -putting tan on the horse rinjrs was referred to the Horse -Committee. Mr Ltttfeg tett-r was referred to the Ram Fair Committee.

Account- to the amount of £295 14s 3d were passed for payment. A* A J ><^ U " < _* of tw^l V guineas was passed to Mra. H. becretan, late assistant s«sret«rv, in recognition of his services. Mr J. Anderson reported on behalf of the Luncheon ComraiUee, that they had decided that a second, publican's booth should be erected on the ground, and that it should be of a permaoent character. The cost would be about £140, and provision would be made for the luncheon for the men attendant stock, rney recommended the erection ol the second booth, ns proposed The tender of Mr Quill for the luncheon and publican A booth bad been accepted. He might say that the amount received for privileles this year was £490, as against £335 last year. should be placed ifear the carriage exhibits. Li reply to a question, Mr Anderson said that Mr Quill's tender was £3__, as against Mr Burkes £150. Mr Quill had agreed to increase the amount of his tender by £25, in consideration of the erection, of the second publican's booth. The report was adopted. * . • . Mr Leicester Matsoh moved-~"That a subcommittee be appointed, comprising the President, Messrs W. Henderson, MurrayAynsley, Reid, Recce, Overton and the mover." Dr. Levinge suggested that the matter should stand over till after the Show, as the various sub-committees had so* much work to do just now. Mr Recce seconded the motion. Mr Macdonald suggested that the committee should hare power to add to their number, and that it should report in January next. After some discussion the motion was carried, with the addition of giving the committee power to add to their -lumber. Mr Macdonald moved —"That the hour of meeting be altered from 2.30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Mr W: Henderson seconded the motion, which, after discussion, was put and lost. The following gentlemen were electa as members of the Association: —Messrs Henry ' Kimber, W Birdling, C. Morton Anderson, \ J. G. A. Ruddenklau, F. Wilding, Captain I Hawke, Dr. Davenport, J. E. Davenport. The President brought under the notice of the committee the necessity of taking stepto urge npon farmers the importance of taking more care in the bret-ding of horses. Mr Leicester Matson urged the taxation by the Government of stallions as the remedy for the matter referred to by the President. It was resolved that it Be a recommenda* tion by the committee of this Association to farmers to carry out the resolutions of the conference with regard to entire horses; that they should possess certificates of soundness from the Government V.S. Mr Staveley seconded the motion. Mr Hugonin suggested that premiums should be offered by fanners for a selected horse or horses -travelling in a certain district or districts. Mr Reid strongly supported the suggestion 0i t u S on - n * -T* e practice was universal in Scotland, and he did not think they would improve tho breed of horses in New Zealand unless they put their hands in their pockets and offered a premium for a good horse or horses. .
