Considerable excitement was occasioned in Frernantle on August 28th by the appearance of - barque on fire in the harbour. The vessel turned out to be th. Socotra, 1597 tons, C*pum Harder, which left Hamburg on May 19th, bound for Kiao Chau, in Ohina. The barque, winch is loaded with coal and cement, had an uneventful passage to St.'Paul's Jslaud when smoke was seen issuing from the fore hatch A hasty, investigation revealed the fact that the coal had ignited through spontaneous combustion, and although strenuous efforts were made to subdue the outbreak the fire gained force. The hatches were battened down, and a course was shaped for Fremaiitle, where she arrived ten days after tho outbreak.

A member of the Hamburg Association of German Shipmasters, writing home from Singapore, complains tHit "there are still many German merchant ships on the Chinese coast commanded by English officers." and the Association intend taking some action in the matter.

The barque Her_for_,which arrived at Newcastle on August 25th, from Tablo Bay, reports that on the 13th, in 44.23 south nyd 150 east, she passed what was evidently a derelict.
