WELLINGTON, August 17. from westward at all placet north of Napier and .New Plymouth, gale from between north-east and north and west thenet southward to Kaikoura and Hokitika, and from between north-west and south-west elsewhere. Barometer—Fall everywhere. Sea—Heavy ou all western coast and between Caauepoint and Lyttelton, moderate elsewhere. Tides—High on all western coast and the East Coast southward of Castiepoint, poor from thence to the East Cape, moderate thence northward. Rain is probable in all places south oi Napier, Taupo, and Raglan. Warning signals for westerly gales are exhibited at Cape Maria Van Diemen, and for northerly g&let. at Capes Campbell, Farewell Spit, and i'oulwind.

SYNOPSIS OF THE PREVIOUS 24 HOURS. Slowly decreasing pressure everywhere until about midnight, since then it has risen a little. Generally strong northerly winds to gales have been experienced south of Napier and New Plymouth, and rain has failed in all parts of tho country, but has been heavy in tho northern districts.
