KRUGER ASKS SANCTUARY OF AMERICA.
(Received August 17th, 0.20 p.m.) LONDON. August 16. General Buller is twenty miles south of Wonderfontein, and his advance is practically unopposed. Eight hundred Boers, with six guns, are at Lake Chrissie. The recent surrender at Standerton has crushed opposition in the South-eastern Transvaal. General Buller is in touch with General French's scouts. Commandant Ollivier is near Heiibron.
Renter's correspondent states that Commandant De Wet is beyond Ventersdorp, trying to join Commandant De la Rey at I! us ten berg. Lord Kitchener pressing Commandant De Wet hard. President Kruger is sounding the American Government whether the American Consul at Delagoa Bay will accord him sanctuary. i..— "Evening News" says the treatment of vie Colonial Contingents in South Africa needs the severest -investigation, and the nation will implacably resent any shadow of injustice and unnecessary hardship undergone by these splendid troops.
