THE DEFEAT OF THE ENEMY.

LONDON, April 23. Lord Methuen's rearguard were defending the convoy, and were surprised, as the ground was examined three hours previously, and only small parties of Boers were discovered.
A foreigner led a dashing attack. The Boera occupied v jHwtion of the kopjes. After their repifLse they re-formed and tried to pasw round another kopje, but were repulsed with heavy loss.
