THEATRE ROYAL.
The Theatre Royal was crowded to overflowing last night, when Mr Walter Beatley gave his lectare, "Church and Stage, and also an illustrabed description ol various places in Rome, in connection with the wellkiwwn ?ky, "The Sign of the Cross." Mr Bentley in the course of fob remarks on the subject of tha stage and plays, pointed out that the public themselves was. to a large extent responsible for the class of pieces produced, as it was with managers purely a question* of supply and demand. Some fine limelight views of Rome, etc., were exhibited, and several members of the company sang sacred songs with, considerable success. To-night at the Theatre Royal Mr Walter Bentley will give Christchurch. playgoers an opportunity.- of once more seeing lum in the part of "Hamlet," It is refreshing to find in these days of the ascendancy of comic operas and musical farces, that a management has the enterprise to produce ShaKspeftre, and no doubt it will meet with the reward it merits in the shape of a crowdedhouse. <
