MEETINGS, ENTERTAINMENTS, &c.
The Loyal City of Christchurch Ledge, No. 4602, 1.0.0.F.,M.U.i met on Wednesday. N.G. Bro. W. Eldred presided. There was a large attendance of members and visitors, amongst whom were the District officers and several sisters from the Siater Pearce Lodge. After routine business, the N.G. declared the Lodge opened for harmony, and musical selections were given by Sisters Eldred and Napier, Bros. P.P.G.M. T. Grantham, Prov. C.S. C. Foster and Bro. Wass. The Prov. G.M., Bro. Caterer, on behalf of the District, presented P.P.G.M. Bro. D. Kennealy with a very handsome marble clock, for the able manner in which he had filled tho chairs of the North Canterbury District. Bro. Kennealy returned thanks and invited the members to partake of light refreshments. An enjoyable social was given by Mr Job Osborne in the Leeston Town Hall on Thursday evening. There were over 100 guests present. The opportunity waa also taken to wish good-bye and bon voyage to Miss Cowan, who is leaving next week for a visit to the Old Country.
At a meeting of the Committee of the Union Rowing Club, it was decided to send an older to England' to J. Norris and Son for klots and sculls. *he Secretary was instructed to convey the Club's best wishes to Trooper Brooks, now in South Africa, and also to retain his name on the Club roll.
The. Fuller Vaudeville Company gave their performance last might at the Oddfellows' Hall, when there was a large attendance. A new programme will he presented this evening. A social evening -was spent at t'he Dalbeg School to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs A. Kennedy and family on, then" leaving to go to the Tim«tru j district. Mr and Mrs Kennedy and family take with them the best wishes of the incidents of Dalbeg. A sale of work connected' with St. Bartholomew's Church was held in, the Kaiapoi Drill Hall on Friday. There was a good display of work, and a refreshment stall, whilst a cake competition, art gallery, Christmas tree, etc., also attracted attention. The sitaUSo'lders were: —Mesdames Monk, Hunt, Butcher, Parsons, Feldwick, Woodman, Wilmot, Wilson, and Misses Andrews (2), Fawcett (3), Roll, Batch, Hurse, Revell, Burgess, Carpenter, Heyward, and Hester. A Maypole dance, organised by Mrs Meadowcroft, was a pretty spectacle. The string band gave its services.
On Thursday evening the hotel erected by Mr G. W. Pearce at Ashley, on the site of the building destroyed last year by fire, was opened with a "house warming" supper. Mrs Pearce provided a bountiful supply of good things, which were attacked by four contingents, about 200 persons being present. Afterwards a, number of toasts and songs beguiled' the evening till 10 p.m. Mr G. F. Smitih occupied the chair, and Mr % Shae the vice-chair. The toast, "Success to Mr and Mrs Pearce and the _?w Ashley Hotel," was greeted with loud cheering.
