The New Zealand intercolonial trader Northern Chief had an exciting experience off Sydney Heads tho other day. "When about 69 miles from, port she ran into boisterous ■weather. The wind, which started from the eastward, suddenly veered to north-west, west, and eventually to south. With tho shift of wind to the south heavy rain set in, with a high sea running. About this time a huge waterspout was Observed in- the vicinity of the vessel. Captain Mackay wore the enip to endeavour to get clear of it. The waterspout, however, came along at a tremendous pace, and burst within 20ft of the vessel. The crew state that they had never witnessed anything like it, and had tho huge column, containing' many thousand tone of water, struck the vessel, nothing could have saved her' from going to the bottom with all hands.

The officers of the steamer Oceana, before reaching Colombo, sighted a ship in uistresa firing rockets'. The Oceana altered her course, and came across one of the 8.1.5. N. Company's steamers quite disabled. It was the troopship Fkzilka, returning from South Africa to Calcutta. Sha had broken her shaft. The captain came on board the mail steamer, and said that he hod been, drifting about for five weeks, and his ship's company was in a pitiable plight. All that time they had been on. half rations, and had only sufficient to last them for two days more. Thoy were also in a terrible state of scurvy. After giving them a good supply of rations, and after endless business with towlines, hawsers, etc., and after about eight hours' delay, the Oceana got the Fazilka in tow. In about three-quarters of an hour's timo the towline broke, and as she was so near Colombo, they asked the captain of the Oceana 4o arrange for one of their own steamers to go out to them. After further parleying, Captain. Crawford (of the Oceana) left the stoxmer, and reported her at Colombo. During the five weeks the Fazilka had drifted 1500 miles.
