LAND SETTLEMENT IN THE KING COUNTRY.

AUCKLAND, April 19. The ballot for Crown Gliids opened fof settlement in the King Country is proceeding to-day. In all 907 applications have been received for 54 sections, 23 being unapplied for, •while for some of the lots as many as 60 applications have been received. A number of applicants came from the South. The Premier and Miss Seddon and the Hon. W. Jennings, M.L.C., were present during the morning. Several of the successful applicants expressed their gratification to Mr Seddon for throwing the lands open, and were in turn congratulated by the Premier on, their success. Mr Seddon promised those present he ivould construct roads to open up the Kawhia district, so that all might be able to reach the markets.
