MAD CHESS CHAMPIONS.
The "Kleine Zeitung," in an account of the present melancholy o f Steinitz, the great master of chess, adds a list of other notable victims who have lost their wits under the mental strain of their campaiyna upon the chess-board. Everyone knows the terrible case of Paul Mo'rphy, who was, unquestionably, the ablest chess player of all time. Every country :s represented ip this catalogue of "mad chess players"—Labourdonnais, the ablest of Paris combatants, who became insane after one of his notable blindfold games: G. R. Neumann, the German, "who ended his days in a lunatio asylum; the Swede, Anderssen, who shared the like fate; the Russian master, Schiffer; and the famous Vienna genius, Adolf Czank, both of .whom died insane.
