CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.

c . AUTUMN MEETING. Stewards, Mr A. Boyle, Sir Geo. Clifford, —art.. Messrs H. A. Knight, G. F. Martin. R. M. Morten, F. H. Pyne, R. Heaton Rhodes, D. Rutherford, J. Studholme, T. Tc-schemaker, Hon. L. Walker, C. Hood Williams; Judge, Colonel F. J. Fox; surgeon, Dr. J. Palmer; hon. treasurer, Mr G. G. Stead; starter, H. Piper; clerk of course, H. Thompson; clerk of scales, Alfred Evan*; handicapper, J. E. Henrys; •ecretary, W. H. E. Wanklyn. The autumn meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Cmb was concluded y«sterdav in weather the reverse of favourable for* racing. It w -as damp under foot during the earlypart of the day from the rainfall of the day and a drizzling rain fell during the greater p.irt of the afternoon. The consequence was that form was considerably upset, and speculation was restricted, the .sum of £6493 being the total handled _.•»_-•? , macll,r - cs duriQ g tie day, as against *>100 l last year, the total for the two days _.i_ , _?-o ,n , eetin2 bein « £1 5489, as against i-15,902 kit year, when the weather was i rine. The racing was good, and the fields ! up to tue average, but surprises were in I store for backers, two favourites only get- ! ting home during the day, and one of these m the Addington Plate, which was not a handicap event. fllr Henrys must have £»en pleased in the main at the way in "*»hich he had succeeded in concealing the winners. The three runners in the Peerswick Hurdle Handicap were close together for the first half of tlie journey, and then' Dundee was done with, and an interesting race to the last hurdle took place between Fly j and Pensioner in the run home, Fly showir.g most pace. Seldom are three horses : in a race more equally backed, but they came in in reverse order to what the machine indicated. There were seven starters in the Autumn Nursery Handicap, and a pretty finish resulted. Apollo, after shaking 06 the attention of Lady Killer, was challenged by Melita, who raced! the North Islander, hard for supremacy, failing by the narrowest margin, while Cavalry, on the outside, going stronger than any of them, got up and flushed only a neck away, Lady I Killer being just outside the placed ones. j j The fine field of eleven went out for the 1 Yaldhurst Welter Handicap, Nihilist and Scottish Minstrel carrying more money than the others. The speedy Corusa flattered her ; friends, running in advance for nearly five furlongs, but then Suzannah came on and she beat both the public fancies cleverly, paying a substantial dividend to investors. The running of others outeide the place takers calls for no comment, but it should be mentioned that Phryne finished riderless, her jockey, King, who was unhurt, being dislodged at on early stage of the race. A great favourite waa made of the Yaldhurst three-year-old gelding, Skobekff, for the Great Autumn Handicap, indeed his waa deemed an odds on chance; certainly a false price. He looked big though he stripped hard looking. Malatua presented a bright appearance, and came in for more support than any other notwithstanding his penalty. The least unlikely of the starters to win as far as could be judged from appearance, just before the start waa Ben Farley, who sweated profusely, and was evidently not himself. Dundas stripped well and so did j Djin Djin, but the latter had the fewer 1 friends of the quintette. The race needs little description, as Dundas ran along in I front all the way and made an exhibition j of the others, thus causing a strong demonI strat ion to oe raised against him owing to tho exhibition that was made of him on the preceding day. Such a demonstration has seldom been heard at Riocarton, and no doubt there was some excuse, as Dundas, owing to a mistaken course being adopted in riding, made a sorry Many j backed the son of Perkra Warbeck 11. the j second time because they were satis_e_ that __> had failed to show his true form in his first) essay, but others would not Ifive him, fearing A repetition of such formt Buddicombe simply allowed Dundas to rf 1 his own race, and he showed in his true colours for once in a way. The Eighth Challenge Stakes was looked upon as the bf«tof good things for the yaldhurst crack three-year-old, Screw Gun- If anything, he appeared a trifle on the big side, but both he and _»s beautiful sister, Field Eose, were much ___vred as they left the paddock together and -id their preliminary. No fault could be found with'the condition of the others. Benzoin, stripped vreh, and Cannie __iel and Military both looked the better for their racing on Monday. The last named, however, moved somewhat short, and was the outsider of the race, he and Cannie Chiel being the hast backed- The race resolved itself into a contest between this pair after the first four fraiongs had been run, and Mr O'Brien's gelding triumphed in a masterly manner over Sir George Clifford's colt. For Screw Gun the only excuse to be offered is that the big weight on the holding ground I told ft tale, and it is very probable that he was not so well as *ye have.seen, him previously*. At the same time, the two-year- ' olds that beat him are both good under a 1 racing scale of weights. The winner is by '•■ Light Artillery, a «on of .renton, who did Mr O'Brien good swvice, and b:s win makes "the second Mr O'Brien has had Since the race was inaugurated. So little was thought of Military's chance that he was allowed to start a 15 to 1 chance, and was not supported by his owner. A dozen runners faced f the barrier in the Templeton Handicap, J_bber, Hermosa, Obhgado, Paladin, and Cherrystone each having more Wendi thja the winner, St. Dennis, who stuck to his determinedly for a little one, and beat another small one in a **°* head, the favourite, Jabber, finishing And. Bristol the favourite in the Addmgton Plate!'ran a Strong race an* won ntim Sly from the o-tsider, Hawthorn, whose Sr bought Bristol for 63 gumeas when tetss put up for sale ift terms of the race. Tbe Final Handicap was cleverly wop by The Spinner, amongst the unplaced on-j beine First Blood,\ vrho was started three S during the day. There was little 1 alteration irs the order when rounding into the straight, except that Malatua had taken i second place from Djin Djin. At four furlongs from home Skobeleff moved up, an 3at the 3istanco was on terms with Malatua, three lengths behin3 Dundas. From this out the result was never in doubt, Dundas striding along easily in front, winning by three lengths.
