Dr. Piazzi Smyth, ex-Astronomer Royal of Scotland, is dead, aged 81. $fr Henry Duff Traill edited "Literature" since its commencement in 1897, in addition to which he wrote a number of books on various subjeots. He was born at Blackheath in" 1842, and adopted journalism in 1871. He was*-—a extensive contributor to the "Pall Mall .Cassette," the "St. James's Gazette," the "Daily Telegraph," and the "Saturday Review.") (Dr. Pia-si , Smyth, >v\ho was born at Naples in .1819, commenced his astronomical service at the Cape of Good Hope, under Sir T, Maclean, in 1835. He was appointed in 1846 to succeed Thomas Henderson, First Astronomer Royal for Scotland, in the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh. He was the author of several astronomical works. In August, 1888, his application for o*etirem_ll was granted, and he was awarded a small pension.)
