The furniture in the house occu pied by Mipi-tamsey was insured in the *am< office for £&>O, -The ineumiees on the house oocupied by Miss Turner and Mr Eamse* could not be ascertained. • Shortly after 9.30 a*, m. on Wednesday a fire .started on the shingle roof of the parsonage oj St. Mary's, MerivaJe, apparently from a chimney spark. Tlie brigade were on the scene in time to prevent the fire from getting into the house. The roof was considerably damaged, and the furniture was knocked about a bi( i.n the hastiness of the removal of a quantity of it. The house belonged to the Church Property Trustees, and waa occupied by the Rev, a. A. Watson, whose, furniture was insured in the Liverpool, London and Globe Office. The Fire Brigade received a call shortly before three o'clock on Wednesday, but after proceeding along Victoria street to tbe North Belt it was found that the alarm was a false one. The Fire Brigade were called out yesterday afternoon at twenty-five minutes to five o'clock to a fire which had 'Started among tlie Iqosb straw, and the packing cases lying in- tiie yard at the back of Messrs J. Bates and Co., importers of glaes and ohina ware. The fire is supposed to have arisen from a spark from a chimney at the Canterbury Foundry. It was put out by the use of chemicals from one of the engines. i About twenty minutes past eleven o'clock ! last, night an alarm of fire was given from the Hospital box, an outbreak having been discovered in an, unoccupied four-roomed cottage in St. Asaph street West. When the Brigade arrive**! the fire had been extinguished. The house belonged to Mr William Walker, >grocer, Tuam street, and was insured for £100 in-.the North German Office. Apparently attempts had been made to set
the place on fire, and in one front room » wax match and some burned paper was found near the wall, whilst in the obiier front pom the wull paper had oeeu set on fire The house Imd 'been unoccupied for iiearjy three weekj, and the windows had been left open to air it. The damage done waa small, as prompt steps were taken whto tho outbreak was discovered to extinguish it
