SELWYN COUNTY COUNCIL.

I • I The ordinary meeting of the Council was j held on Wednesday. Present—Messrs W. ' Dunlop, J. Reunie", Wolfe, McHaifie, G. j Whitty, J. Gough. and J. G. Murray. In the absence of Air R. Weatenra, the Chairman, Mr Dunlop was voted to the chair. The report of the Committee as to the concessions in connection with the New Brighton tramway was read and adopted. Mr Geo. Harris appeared in support of a petition against the granting of a slaughtering license to Mr Hayley, at Dunsandel. The grounds of the objection on the part of the signatories to the petition were that a creek passing through tneir properties came through the site of the proposed slaughterhouse. The other objections were that the slaughterhouse was too close to the residences of several landowners and to the township. The Council having heard the Inspector of Slaughterhouses on the subject*, decided not to grant the application on the present site. Tbe report of the Inspector of Slaughterhouses was read and approved. He reported tliat he had condemned six beasts j during the month. Mr Greig waited on the Council "with re- ! ference to the Halswell river backing up and destroying some of his crops and flooding his property. He found on inspection that the weeds had not been cleared out of | the river, which had caiused the backing up 'of the water. It was resolved to write to the inspector, drawing his attention to the complaint. Messrs D. McMillan and T. B. Howson waited upon the Board with reference to a new culvert at Cooper's cutting. The Council decided to grant £125 ■ towards the cost of the work. On the motion of Mr Murray, it was resolved—"That the Council's engineer be requested to inspect the river HalsweO, especially with regard to that part from Lake Ellesmere to the north end of the Ahuriri -lagoon, witih "a ,viewv,of laying before, the ratepayers a scheme for the efficient drainage of the district." A letter was read from the Patriotic Fund Committee, and it was resolved to advertise that subscriptions would be received at the County Council office. ] Accounts amounting to £1270 were passed for payment. . It was resolved that the present arrangements with regaru"to dog registration continue, and that "the fee for dogs kept solely for destruction of rabbits be 2s 6d till 31st March, after which- the full fee should be charged. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Whitty, that a letter of sympathy be sent to the chairman in connection with the recent accident to his brother. j The Council then adjourned till January j 10th.
