CHRISTCHURCH SHORTHAND AND TECHNICAL SCHOOL.

The annual closing ceremony and distribution of certificates in connection with Mr and Miss Digby s Shorthand and Technical School took place at the Metaphysical Clubrooms, Hobbs's buildings, yesterday afternoon. Tljere was a large attendance of pupils, the room being completely filled. Mr T. 'S. Weston, member of Canterbury College Board of Governors, presided and distributed the certificates to the successful ' students. In the course of his speech Mr Weston referrea to the importance of a ' thorough practical knowledge of shorthand- . coupled with a good general education. _ He also referred to the success of the pupils of I the school during the past year, nearly fifty certificates having been grunted to the pupils ;by Sir Isaac Pitman and Sons. He then I distributed the certificates. The following j are the names of the successful pupils: — ; Pitman's first-class high speed certificates— 140 words per minute. After tbe certificates were presented tt ooncext programme was gone through, the various items being contributed by the pupils. Tho programme comprised a piano duet by Misses North and Hannay; piano solos by Misses de Veaux, Fisher, Smart and Atkinson : songs by Misses E. Orchard, M. Snell, M. Russell, E. Russell, E. Vincent, and Mr T. Curnow; and a recitation by Miss Gwendolyn Digby. An exceptionally popular item was fortune-tellinjr by Mrs De la Mare. During tlie afternoon Miss Digby was presented with a handsome dressintr-case and a tennis racquet. The dressing-case bore the following inscription, -'Presented to Miss , Digby, as a small token of esteem, from her? , pupils. 22nd December, 1899."
