OBITUARY.
■Mr George Ashbolt, whose death, at the age of 54 years took place on the 20th inst., was born in Wellington, his parents having been passengers in one of the first four ships. Mr Ashbolt, when > a boy, served in the Maori war, and shortly afterwards came to Canterbury, arriving in Christchurch when the site now occupied by the Cathedral was a swamp. For a number of years he followed 'the calling of a jockey, being employed in the stables of Messrs Redwood and Stafford and the Hon. W. Robinson. Later and at different periods, Mr Ashbolt acted as verger at St. Luke's Church, He leaves a widow and a family of eleven.
