A team from the jCa__terbury Chess Club visited Kaiapoi on TSHirsday ev*a_h_g, and woa ten games to two, with cue _uw. For C_rri_rtchT_r_h, games were won by Messrs ME-oer, Chatter*. Nightinga!e, F. E. Fraser, Kirton, Robot., G_bb, Wot—arspoon, Anderson, and Wiggins, and for Kaiapoi Me—rs RoH and Bate scored wins. T__e game between. Mr Kennedy aad the Rev. Gow waa drawn.

A most successful concert, in aid of the school prite fund, was given by the Riccarton Lilipatians, in the Harewood road school, on Friday last. The performance was very much appreciated, most of the items being loudly encored. Miss N. Packer and Mr W. Lake, of Papanui, and others also sang solos, which were well received. Mr Keith, chairman of the school committee, presided. A concert and dance in connection with the Hornby Sports was held at Hornby on Friday last. There was am attendance of 200. " Songs were given by the following: — Mrs Blackburne and the Rev. Mr Blackburne, Mrs Scales, Miss Sinclair, and Messrs H. Prebble, L. Harper, Smithson, J. Best, Pearce, Tidynian, Griffiths, Spicer, Bell, A. Dawson, Holdfield, Robinson. The caterer, Mr Hardy,, gave every satisfaction, and the music was'supplied by Mr Docherty. At the close of tho concert, Mr J. Bert, after thanking the audience, requested them to join in singing "God Save the Queen" and "Rule Britannia."

At an entertainment at St John's parish room, Leeston, on Tuesday, a brief lecture on ''Australia,'' was given by the Rev. W. B. Sisato. Musical items werfc contributed by Mrs Askew, Misses With.ll, Spring, M. Inman, Cooper, and Lunn, Rev. W. Grant, Messrs Kearne, A. Cooper, J. W, Hammond, and Harold Hammond. The accompaniments were played by Mrs Kearne, Mrs Hammond, Miss Withell, Miss Lunn and 3liss Spring.

On Friday evening the last of a series of euchre matches, held at Stoke, was played in the schoolroom. Nine games having been played, the prizes were presented as follows: —Ist. Miss M. Galletly, silver butter cooler; 2nd, Miss J. Lordmer, a pair handsome vases; booby, Miss E. Garrett, whistle; Ist, Mr Westby Falrwea_her, walnut writing-desk; 2nd, Mr Robert Garrett, silver-mounted inkstand; booby, Mr George Garrett, squeaker. The annual meeting of the Tai Tapu Lawn Tennis Club was held in the Public Library on Wednesday evening last. The statement of accounts showed that there was a small balance in hand. A meeting of the Committee of the Canterbury Athletic and Cycling Club was held on Tuesday evening. Present—Messrs G. E- Good (chairman), J. H. Parker, Hallenstein, Kennedy, Best, Berry, Walden, Montague, McK-citnie, and E. J. Righton (secretary). Mr J. H. Parker suggested that the Club organise a monster excursion by rail to Weka Pass. Correspondence was received from Messrs Mason, Struthers and Co., appointing Mr E. C. Meredith Kaye (a vice-president of the Club) as a judge in the Rover Road Race: Mr G. Biltcliff wrote, resigning his position on.the.Committee, and it waa at the next meeting. Six new lnembers were elected, and other routine and special business was dealt with. There was a good attendance at the Cure Boating Club's annual concert, at Kaiapoi, on Wediiesday evening. Musical selections were given by Misses. A. Corrick and E. Wilson, M-wars J- Templeton, J. Holland, C .Hoskins, J. Johnston, R. Drtscoll, H. L. Armitage, J. H. Biackwell, and Bennetts, followed by a commedietta "A Trip to Dublin," in which Miss Menzies, Messrs F. R. and C. Parnham, and J. Johnston took the ports. A meeting of the Highbank District Settlers' Association was-held last week, when a discussion took place on. the subject, "Is it desirable to abolish the present fro-called High Schools?" and a resolution was carried ur__mcß__ly to the effect that High schools being nothing but class schools, should be abolished, and in their place two or more higher standards should be added to the chief primary schools in each district, so as to make secondary education free and within the reach of all. A resolution was passed, endorsing the action of the Government in sending the Contingent to the Transvaal.

At a meeting of the Hornby Bath Committee, the hon. secret-ay reported that the bath would probably be ready about the end of the week. It was deckled to join tihe Association, and Mr Dunnett was appointed to represent the Hornby Club. It was decided to ask Mr T. Basset* to consent to be elected preaident of the club. At a meeting of the local officers of the New Zealand Cyclists' Alliance, a further application from the promoters of the Toad race from Timaru to Christchurch was considered, and it was resolved that the Alliance riders should be permitted to compete. It was decided.to. ask the executive of the Alliance to frame a definite rule on the subject, as the present rules were not too clear on the point.' The annual general meeting of the Lyttelton Lawn Tennis •'Club was held in the Colonists' Hall on Monday evening. There was a fair attendance-of• members, and the chair was occupied by Mr N. C. Schumacher, who congratulated the club on the very successful season just closed. The balance-sheet 1 showed a credit of £15 lis 6d. The anniversary of tie Sydenham Wesleyan Metisodist Sunday School was celebrated on Suaday. when Special services were conducted by the Rev*. W. Baumber, C H. Laws, and H. Bull. The collections were £6 Is lOd, £5 13s, and £7 8s 2d, the financial results of each service being an increase npon the previous year. Miss Dowle presided at the organ, and ths singing of

In continuation of the Sydenham Wes* leyan Sunday S.hool anniversary, a miscellaneous entertainment was held in the schoolroom on Wednesday evening. Items were contributed by the Corrick family, Misses M. Hall, Mann, Andrews and Livingston, Messrs Woodward, Mason, Barlow and A. Joll, and Miss Dowle and the school children.

A meeting of the Linwood Temperance Brass Band was held on Tuesday evening at the Phillipstown schoolroom. Mr J. R. Brunt, who occupied the chair, gave a short address to the young men, pointing out that the main features necessary to attain success were punctuality, regularity and close attention. The following officers were unanimously elected:—Patroness, Mrs A. E. G. "Rhodes; president, Mr J. R. Brunt. A number of ladies and gentlemen were elected vice-presidents and hon. members. Tbe band at present consists of thirty-three members, and Messrs Smith, Whitley and Harrington are officiating as instructors.

The third competition of the Carleton Morris-tube Club for trophies given by friends to be shot for, was completed on Saturday last. J. Gingavon, 101, waa the highest scorer. The scores in the Ladies' match were:—Miss M. Legros 89 points, Miss J. Brown 89 points. In the Youths' match, Percy Stirling was the highest scorer. At a meeting of the Socialist Church oo Sunday, a resolution was passed expressing sympathy with the action of the Government in its endeavour to reduce the price of coal by limiting the profits of the middlemen, and especially with the Premier's expressed wish that coal mines should be worked by the State.
