THE DISPOSAL OF NIGHTSOIL.
CONFERENCE OF LOCAL BODIES. 2 coherence, ebnvened by tbe Sydenham "orougn Council to discuss the position wine-, has arisen respecting the disposal of nightsoil through the passing of the Heathcoteßoad District Samtat-ic- Bill, was held at the City Council Chambers last night, 1 Representatives from the City CouncU, t and the Sydenham, Linwood and St. Albans - Borough Councils, and the Town Clerks of Sydenham and Linwood were present. t Air J. Hadfiald (Mayor oi Sydenham), , who was voted to the chair, said the pro--1 ~ts»ns of the Act practically clos-d all placewhere refuse and nightsoil could be deposited, with the exception of about thirty or forty acre 3in the centre of one of the Drainage Board's reserves. Mr Board said sooner or later they would have cause to thank the Heathcoto Board for having had the Act passed, as it would compel the local boaies to adopt some better method of dealing with nightsoil. He moved * —"That in the opinion of this Conference some improved system for tha disposal of nightsoil and refuse than at present obtains is desirable, and that a committee, consisting c of representatives from the City and the - boroughs of Sydenham, Linwood, St. Albans 1 and Woolston, be formed, for the purpose of considering the best methods oi improvei ment." c Mr Taylor seconded the motion. Mr Morris said that the only thorough * method of dealing with the matter was for 8 tbe boroughs to amalgamate with the City, * when a high pressure water supply could be 1 provided and a proper drainage scheme completed. He understood that the Heathcote Road Board were prepared to construct a road which would bring the reserve within the prohibited limit. . Mr H. B. Sorensen suggested that a ■ "destructor" similar to that in use in Wellington might be erected. It was stated that a temporary road through the reserve would cost about £50. ' The Chairman remarked that they might adopt a similar system to that in force in Dunedin, where the refuse, etc., was conveyed out of the city by rail. Mr Morris stated that the Mayor of Christchurch had gone to Wellington, and would enouire into the details connected with the - "destructor" there. , After further discussion, the motion was s agreed to. 7 Mr Morris moved—"That this Conference 1 recomm-nds to the local bodies interested £ the desirability of at once erecting a ' des- * tructor' for the disposal of refuse." Mr Sorensen ajconded the motion, which s was agreed to. > Mr Manhire moved—"That the Drainage * Board be requested to erect a temporary " roadway into the sewage farm reserve, in 3 order to comply with the Heathcote Road 1 Board Sanitation Act, and that the City - and the boroughs of Sydenham, St. Albans, b Linwood and Woolston guarantee the cost c in proportion to population." The City Council delegates (Messrs * Sorensen and Morrison) said they 'had .no * authority to commit the Council to any * expense. Both supported the proposal. The motion was agreed to, the City Council } representatives not voting. It was decided that a deputation, consisting of Messrs Hftdileld, Board and Smith, J should wait on the Drainage Board.
