TREE-PLANTING AT KAIAPOI.
On Friday evening, at a meeting con- ■ vened ,at the Kaiapoi Borough Council } Chamber, to consider the question of im- , provements, such as tree planting, etc.i , there were present—The Mayor (Mr E. Feldl wick), in the chair, Dr. Murray, Messrs A. I 'Mackajr, J. Daly, B. Kuigafc, J. Bugg, S. Wright, and J. L. Wilson. The Mayor said the bad weather was per- ' haps accountable for so small an attendance. ' The meeting was called to discuss the ques- > ticrn of improvements, -which might be made ; by tree planting on a section near the Couni cil Chamber, also on .the banks of the river, : and in Darnley square, and, perhaps, also . in the Domain. " He suggested that to test if an interest was taken, in the matter the meeting should be adjourned till nest week. Mr Wilson pointed out that it was possible the spring might be an early one, and as the planting should be completed in July or August, no time should be lost. The two and a ;half acres of Darnley square, presented by Mr J. S. White to the borough, eighteen years ago, he regretted had not been planted, and the sites referred to by Ks Worship should also have attention. A little fund of about J330_0r.£40 ehould be I raised to do work, which neither the Domain Board or Borough Council could undertake, but which an emergetic committee could carry out. He feared jthat after all there 1 was some apathy on the part of many in the - town who expected the _few to do everything for them, and, of course, if there was no response to the request for a better attendance at a futnre meeting, the matter must fall through. Incidentally, he referred to the additions to the .Beach plantations last year, where 88 per cent, of the pinus muricata were growing, and to the (arrangements now. being made for additional planting this season. Mr Knight moved; and Mr Bugg seconded—"That those present should form a committee to obtain support, and report on improvements to be suggested." After psome discussion, Mr Wilson moved, and- Dr. Murray seconded—"That the meeting be adjourned till Friday. ,1 The motion was withdrawn, and the amendment carried. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the Borough Council for having called the meeting, and to the Mayor for presiding.
