I may inform you that of t Glasgow and Edinburgh have for\';sev«ra4 ' months past had under consideratioir(%ecom- 1 toendations from their Gas Engineers Seeling with the complete removal of their gasPworks ' the expenditure of ftme ' £200,000 each. . _ . ','- 4 m "The Edinburgh Council, deauotts of mcc& ing their Engineer's -wishes, but cax«ful not Ji to commit' themselves to «_, expenditure of * such' magnitude without giving the matter their closest consideration, appointed a Com- " mission, which, together with ifcair Gas Engineer, has, during tho past few months, visited every important city in Europe.*' . . . SpeeJong of the Continent, they say: "We have examined the publio lighting separately as regards gas and electricity, '.taking both together, what ia the position of Paris in respect to the rest of Europe? Paris stands above Vienna, Buda-Pestb, Rome, London, Glasgow, and most of the large towns of England. Barely two years ago, .Berlin, which had not a single Welsbach burner, waa less well lit than Paris. To-day it has 32,000 incandescent gasbumers. Wo also found the cities of Munich, Milan, Hamburg, and many others in North Germany, and, in a less degree, Liverpool, WERE TjIMITING' THE USE OF ELECTRICITY, and DEVELOPING UNCANDESCENT GAS BURNERS, having found in the present condition of science the best solution of the problem how to do well and CHEAPLY. In all towns visited experiments were being carried out t>n more or less extensive scales, and were reported upon FAVOURABLY where the INCANDESCENT GAS LIGHTING SYSTEM had been tackled in a thorough manner. We were surprised to note the entail extent to which electricity is used on the Continent, and then chiefly in lighting large' open spaces, and in wide boulevards; and even there it is generally supplemented with incandescent gas lamps, evidencing the fact that Continental authorities are not enamoured with eleotrio aro lighting to the extent they were some years ago. The reasons given for this change of opinion were, that it was found THAT INCANDESCENT GAS LIGHT was MORE EFFECTIVE, by giving a MORE EVEN DISTRIBUTION of light over the footpaths, and WAS MORE ECONOMICAL. Tho object of attainment in STREET LIGHOJING being to got a UNIFORM FLOOD OF LIGHT WITHOUT DEEP SHADOWS, and this is found impossible with the only cheap method of lighting by electricity, viz., the arc." "These are the recorded opinions of the gentlemen specially appointed to judge as to the merits or demerits of the various systems of lighting, and having laid these before the whole Council of Edinburgh, they \ unanimously decided to go on with the ereotion of new works. Much more in the same strain could be added, but enough has been said-to convince the most sceptical that coal gas has Btill a prosperous future, which will be maintained for many years to come." - ~~R.
