ANGLO-COLONIAL NOTES.

L - . " ~ -« . ;i> ,' J I - t (took otra OWN COBBJESFONDENT.) I *'...• LONDON, May 19. In the Queen's Bench Division of the Irish | High ° Court,. at Dublin, this, wreck, before ' the Chief Justice of Ireland, and three other , Judges, decision 1 was given,- on a new trial' rirotioa, in Reynolds; v the Enfield Cycle Company. Plaintiff, a weu-lmown profes- ; sional cyclist, (had sued defendants to re- | cover damages for alleged breaca of conttaet I in connection with a cycling "tour in Aus-. tralia .and New Zealand. In the first trial, | the plaintiff secured a verdict for £183. On | Tuesday it was decided that the first verdict was against the weight of evidence, | and judgment was entered for defendants. A proposal has been made to liquidate voluntarily the Austral Cycle Agency. The concern was registered on October 22nd, 1896, to acquire the goodwill of the businesses of cycle agents carried on in Australia under the style of the Austral Cycle' Agency, and W. flßyder, Singer and Swift, and in New Zealand under the style of S. R. Steadman and T, Boyd and Son; and to acquire and undertake the whole or any of the assets and liabilities of the proprietors of the said businesses in connection therewith. The -capital as £110,009, in 110,000 ordinary shares of £1 each, all I of which has been called and paid. • It is stated that business in all classes of manufactured .goods at Birmingham is good. ,on the export side of the trade, Australia ' and South Africa being two of thebest /bus-v tomers, while the indents received from' New' Zealand are of a, substantial character. Another warning nas bad to be .issued by the postal authorities in referedce to the Imperial Penny Postage. Nojtwithstanding previous steps taken to notify the public as to the limits within which penny letter postage to British Possessions and Protectorates is applicable, numbers of letters are still be£*g posted prepaid only Id per £oz, addressee, to places not yet included in the scheme. The principal colonies concerned are New Zealand, Australia, and Cape Colony^/The letter postage to these colonies, ifcos pointed out, is still 24d per £oz, and/fetters prepaid at the {penny rate are charged 3d per £oz (double the deficiency) on delivery ,to the addresses. Since ,tpe issue of the previous notices on this Object, Jamaica, Mauritius, British North Borneo, and Labuan have adhered to the scheme; and the letter postage for these places will be Id per £oz from the 24th inst. Many enquiries having been made whether Burma and British Columbia aire included *in the penny postage scheme, the Post-master-General gives notice that are so included, Burma as a part of British India, and British Columbia as a part of the Dominion of Canada. Much concern is shown by a section of the "labour" Press at the reported proposal to bring New Zealand tourists to the Paris Exhibition in a Japanese vessel, even though the boat may have been, and probably was, built in Great Britain or Ireland. "This is an important point in view of recent developments," says the "Echo." "The colonial people, loyal as they are to the Old Country, will go to the cheapest and best market if they want anything. But if our Japanese friends, whose ships are practically all built here, are able to underbid British steamship companies in a case like this, the whole position is worthy of serious consideration.' "Truth" prophesies a great future for New Zealand curios that have just uegun to come to this country. , "The designs are such a curious union of the grotesque and the effective, and are so unlike anything ever seen before," says the -lady correspondent of Mr Labouehere's paper.
