THE HORSE STABBING CASES.
_»_. Notwithstanding the fact that tiie police have had every possible assistance from the public, who have spared neither information nor suggestion likely to elucidate the mystery connected with the perpetrator of the recent and past horse-killing cases, they have made little progress towards his detection. Innumerable statements have been taken, enquiries and investigations have been made daily, and almost tiie whole detective force has been kept busy during the week, but the result so far has been of a purely negative character. Several clues i which at first promised to lead to something' tangible have,' when followed up, proven' to be barren. When it became known to the police that a number of people were in the habit of visiting Scarlett's brewery, it was thought that the perpetrator of the outrages would be found to be one of these casual visitors. It is understood that in one or two cases full enquiries were made as to the movements of these men, but satisfactory explanations were forthcoming in all cases. In another instance it was found that a person who was suspected of complicity in the outrages, could not possibly have had anything to do with the recent cases. * The police, it is understood, intend having a cast made of the footmarks observed by the black tracker last Sunday.
