"• As will be seen by a notification elsewhere Mr John Connal solicits the vote and interest of the ratepayers of the Linwood, Woolston and Sumner Boroughs at the Harbour Board election on Monday next. The annual picnic of the employees of the the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company will be held at Pearson's Park, West Oxford, on Monday, 20th inst. The excursion will proceed to Oxford via Waimakariri Gorge. Mr W. W. Collins will, in the Lyceum, to-morrow, deliver an address on the verse " Even so faith, if it have not works is dead in itself." Previous to the lecture a musical programme will be given. The Engineers' Band will proceed to New Brighton on Sunday afternoon by the 2.5 tram. A meeting of master painters will be held at eight o'clock, in Otley's Hall, 0e painters' dispute. •"•Js^ A general meeting of butchers will be hel_ on Monday evening next, when the nomina--tions will finally close for the Grand Handicap. A meeting re the bakers' picnic will be held at the Shades Hotel,, at eight o'clock, this evening. A garden party in aid of the Melanesian mission will be held at St. Michael's Vicarage on Monday next, at 2 p.m. There will also be an entertainment at 7.30 p.m. Children's work, curios, «fee, will be on sale, and the proceeds will bo devoted to the new hospital at Norfolk Island. A special meeting of the East Christchurch Amateur Swimming Club was held last evening. The secretary reported that 159 entries had been received for the various events. Correspondence was read from several of the vice-presidtnts accepting the office assigned to them. Mr E. W. Roper has offered to act as starter. The annual races will take place this afternoon in the Gloucester street baths, commcncine at 2.30. In connection with the Starborough sale on February 15th, buyers are reminded that the last train to Lyttelton -to catch the special steamer, Rotorua, leaves at 10.55 a.m. on Monday next, 13th inst.
