Cobcroft won the toss, "and elected to bat. I. Mms and *Frankish stood out of the New Zealand team. George Mills, who should have been caught behind the wickets, was clean bowled by Pickett, one wicket being down for four "•rijns. Windsor captured Baker's and Uobcroft's wickets with two successive balls.lujji the board showed two and three wickets for 1 four runs. At 57 Reese was badly missed in the long field. At 60 a double change of bowling was effected, and Wilson's fourth ball Reese put up in the slips, where it was held—Four for 61. With the score at 92 Sims was caught for 11. With the score at 154. Fisher, who batted very nicely, was foolishly run out. His score included Wo tours, oue three, and seven twos. At 174 Boxshall played Hammond into the hands of x aimer at point. His bo included two lives, the result of overthrows, seven fours, four threes, and seven twos. At 1/6 Boxshall played 'Hammond on. At 244, Downes, who had been batting an hour and a half without giving the semblance of a chance, hit Pickett into the slips, where Kissling brought off an easy catch. His score included one five (the only hit of the game outside the boundary), eight fours, two threes, and eight twos. Savigney, in the next over, lowered Upham's stumps. Ashbolt played a very serviceable innings. The first innings of the New Zealanders closed for 245. With a little more than an hour's play, Windsor and Savigney faced Reese and Upham. The latter was twice no-balled. Several changes were tried ineffectually, and both batsmen played excellently. At the close of the day's play the Tasmanians had made 44 without tneloss of a wicket.
