ACCIDENT TO THE SOUTH EXPRESS.
• Passengers travelling from Christchurch by the express yesterday morning experienced a sudden and violent shock just as they were approaching the Ashburton station. The train was signalled to come in, but for some reason yet to be explained the points were not right A number of cattle trucks happened to be standing on the side line of rails, and a chain distant was a detached passenger carriage. As soon as the driver saw* what was about to happen the-, breaks were applied, but before the train could? be .brought to a standstill it mn into the detached passenger carriage, lifting one end clean up.from the rails, and driving it forward with great force against' the cattle trucks. The empty carriage was badly knocked about, but this appeared to be the extent of the damage, the passengers in the express escaping with a nasty shaking.
