CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
A« committee meeting of the Canterbury 3 Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday . afternoon, Mr A. H. Turnbull (president) in . the-chair. Apologies were received from _ : Messrs W. D. Meares, W. Recce, and H. r Q.uane. t The Secretary reported that Messrs* I. t Gibbs and A. Kaye, being the only two mem- , bers nominated for election on the Lvtteiton . Harbour Board, had been declared duly ; elected. Messrs Gibbs and Kave returned I thanks for their election. A resolution was . carried according a hearty vote of thanks to . tbe Hon. J. T. Peacock for bis services in . representing the Chamber on the* Lyttelton Harbour Board for so long a t>eriod. A sub-committee, consisting" of Messrs W. Recce, G. T. Booth, and H. H. Rayward, was appointed to enquire into the working -of the patent laws, in accordance with the resolution moved by Mr W. Recce. Correspondence was read—From Mr J. J. Stephenson, asking tlie Chamber to en- ■ deavour to obtain direct communication with s Capetown, for the purpose of exporting . frozen meats and produce generally. The letter was received, and, after full discussion, the Secretary was instructed to forward a reply, acknowledging receipt of letter. From [ the Dunedin Chamber, acknowledging receipt j of letter on the subject of delaying the Melbourne steamer at the Bluff. It was decided to again write to the General Post Office on I the subject. From the Philadelphia Com- , mercial Museum, forwarding pamphlets, and , asking for an exchange of official publications. , The letter was received. From Mr Audley Coote, forwarding reprints of .articles on the Pacific'cable. The letter was received. From the Wellington Chamber, forwarding copy of ■ resolution pointing out the benefit of the Vancouver service, and considering that a reversion to the four-weekly service would be a retrograde . step. The meeting thoroughly agreed with the views of the Wellington Chamber, and urged that the latter body should communicate with the Govern-, ment with a view to maintaining the Vancouver service.at an accelerated rate of speed. From the Public Works Department, re the Waipara—Cheviot railway, stating that as '. the railway was well in hand from the Blen--1 heim end, the staff could not be moved to the Waipara end, but if an officer could be spared laiter on to assist the Surveyor he would be instructed to start from the Waipara end. It 1 was decided to acknowledge the receipt of the letter, and to express a hope that the Depart- , ment would be able to spare the officer mentioned. It was decided to write to the Secretary of the Postal Department asking for a reply to the letter sent by the Chamber in November, on the subject of the penny post. The President'was instructed to see the [ officer in charge of the Telegraph Department with reference to the refusal of the Department to accept telegrams when lines were down. After the transaction of routine busi- . ness the meeting terminated. * -
