The healing of the ease in re the Sydenham Gospel Mission, in buico, which was fixed for ye-teniav. was adjourned until to-day. Mr llussoii, one of tho counsel engaged in the case, was on Vnard the Flora on his way down from Wellington. The heuvy will.i-'.vc.-t gale c.\pericn_ed had detained the steamer, and she did not arrive until the evening. A troublous matter at various times to the Committse of the Canterbury Rugby Union barf been the payment of the expenses of players, living distances from town, selected to tiJ:e part in interprovincial matches. One roprssontative, living nt Kaiiipoi, had liis expenses* for the.su matches refused, though three others, two of whom resided at Cheviot and one at A&hburton, received cheques. The Kaiapoi representative protested against this distinction, rind tlto principle is to be fought out at the next general meeting of tiie Union. At the end of la&t season the Canterbury Union deducted from the accounts of certiin referees the claim they made for loss of time. Mr 1). K. Torranee, one of the referees in question, has written protesting very strongly Hgttinst the action of the Committee in this reupect. In the past, ho asserted tliat he luul been p:tid for loss of time. He claimed that he was still entitled to the amount, and would not liuvo undertaken to act for the Union had he understood that the Union did not recognise such a request. The Committee of the Horticultural Society met last night. Present—Messrs T. West (in tho chair), Jones, Lowe, Allen, und Nairn. f At was reported tint th* Art Gal- , lery had been obtained for the autumn show, on Mavoh Bth, in connection with which prizes were apportioned and judges appointed. It woe agreed that the gardens .md children's plots should be judged in time to be included in tbo show prize list. It was • - .stated that no roply had been received from the Department, o-f Agriculture to the the Government should offer for an exhibition of fruit in Canterbury, ft prize similar to that given to Auckland. It has been found that there is a gradual lowering of the flow from the deep wells at tho cit/schools, which, sooner or later, will probablt necessitate steps being taken to improve tjhe supply. In view of this contingency, ihe Education hoard, on the recommendation of its Buildings Committee, has, decided to enquire from each School Committee, including St. Albans, -what revenue is derived from the swimming baths, a portion of which income it was considered should be rot en one side to meet future expenditure. At the. Addington Yards yesterday there was another draft of fat lambs from the Canterbury Agricultural College, bred specially with a view to testing the values in the local market of certain crosses fattened to the standard of the frozen meat trade. The ewes from which the lambs were produced were chieily three-quarter-bred and pure Border Leicesters, and the prices realised yesterday for the lambs were as folInv: io Mirvpshire r-rn-r.? The Education Board yesterday appointed Air t\ S. Howard, of the Richmond .School, to act as Inspector for six months during the absence of Mr Wood. Special arrangements were made for the conduct of the school. The Education Board have decided ihat unless the schools' staffs are kept within the limits of the regulations, the process of allround reductions is tlic alternative. The Appointments Committee of the Education Board proved its claim yesterday to be, on finance, an economic body. It recommended certain arrangements at the Richmond School connected with the carrying on of tho inspectorate. "It will cost the Board about £100," interrogated a member. 'Oh, na," replied the secretary, "we save £3." There was a little breeze at the Charitable Aid Board yesterday re the amount of spirituous liquors supplied to the recipients of charitable aid. After some discussion, it was resolve*! to call the attention of the Medical Officer to the figures contained in a return before the Board. Some excitement was caused in the city yesterday through the circulation of a rumour to the effect that the "horse fiend" had been arrested, but up to the time of going to press no arrest had been made. It is understood that Mr Geo. Laurenson has definitely decided to contest the Lyttelton seat at the general election. It is probable he will stand in the interests of the Left Wing. One of the successful scholarship holders under the North Canterbury Education Board lives at Halswell, and as the coach and tram service is inconvenient, and his parents do not wish him, on account of his age, to live in town, his father applied to the Board to provide him with a pony or a bicycle. If the lad had to live in town he would be entitled to an extra £20. Members of the Board felt that the parents to keep the boy at home should be eneauraged, and decided to meet him half way by granting him £10. An important statement, as bearing on the numerical strength of the local population, was made at the Board of Education by the Chairman yesterday. Upon an application being made for a side school at Mount Hutt, Metliven, the Chairman said that in the last ten years the number of schools under the Board had increased by forty-one, but the number of children in the schools was less now than it was then. This was a good point as to settlement in the country, but it was, he said, a serious matter of expense to the Board. The choice of teachers, whether by the Education Board or the interested committees, engaged the attention of the Appaintments Committee at its recent meetings, and the Board endorsed its recommendations. The Ashley Committee expressed the opinion that they should have a voice in the appointment, and the Board agreed to reply that this school had six applicants to choose from, which gave as mucn choice as it was* justified in placing in their nanus, and the choice must be made from the approved apElicants, or the matter must be left to the ostrd. The West Melton School went a step further and named an appointee. The committe3 was advised that the Board could not accept the appointment of an)* candidates not approved, and all specially mentioned had been pronounced competent by the inspectors.
