LYTTELTON.

The ordinary meet-ins of the Lyttelton Borough Council was held on Monday night. Present—His Worship the Mayor, and Crs. Field, Smith, Laurenson, Cook, Webb, Brown, Grubb, Dallcy, and Lewin. The Progressive Liberal Association wrote, ask ing what steps had. been taken to prepare the new rolls as required by the Municipal Act. The Mayor said that nothing as yet had been done, and it Mas resolved that the necessary steps should be taken. The Cycling Association wrote, asking permission to run races on a day named on Norwich Quay and Dampier Bay roads. Cr. Cook moved—"That the races be not allowed. He thought these races were extremciy dangerous. He had noticed "scorching" in London street, where the roadway wa_ asphalted. Cr. Webb seconded the motion, which was supported by Cr. Dalley. Cr. Smith opposed the motion. He thought i thletics should be encouraged. He had no ioubt that the cyclists would take care to £uard the safety of the public. The Council should, of course, take no responsibility. He moved —"That the Council offer no objection." Cr. Laurenson supported the amendment. The amendment Mas lost. Cr. Lewin moved —"That the letter be received, and the club be informed that the Council have no legal power." The amendment wa3 carried, the motion being withdrawn in its favour. The caretaker of the Domain wrote, reporting damage done to trees by boys, and the'want of repairs to the fence. The letter was referred to the Estates Committee, wito power to act. Mr E. Queree wrote, asking why he did not pet a share of the Council's work and snpplyinv of screenings. The matter was referred to the Works Committee to report. The Estates Committee's report was adopted, as was that of the Inspector of Nuisances. The latter urged the construction of a public abattoir. The By-laws Committee's report was _fopted. The Finance Committer reported receipts £155 3s sd, and recommended of accounts amounting to £249 14s 3d. The overdraft was £856 10s 4d. The report was adopted. The report of the Foreman of Works was adopted. The Water Supply Committee rcnorted that two wells, respectively 175 ft and 165 ft deep, had been sunk without water being found. The report was adopted. The*"' Engineer "at the- Pumping Station reported that 3,491,000 gallons had been pumped since the last "report, as against 3,461,000 during the same period last year. The Council, having set up a special committee to report on the desirableness of establishing- a public abattoir for Lyttelton, adjourned.
