AUCKLAND, February 7. Two Mormon .Priests from Salt Lake, uo» companied by Sydney Whaanga, have gone t» Kaipara to prosolytyse the Maoris. Inspector Farley, ot the West Australian police, who is visiting the colony on business, combined with pleasure, was a passenger by the Elingamite from Sydney. The Rev. Father Luck, brother of the lato. Bishop Luck, is lying at Bishop Lenihan's residence in a precarious condition. Considerable excitement was caused iv Commanded when it- was known that Robert Beattie, a highly respectable business man, hid been aricsted. Accused was brought before the Magistrate's Court charged with theft, in or about the month of January, of retorted gold valued at £14 8s 4d, the property of some person or persons unknown. The'case was remanded for eight days. Bail was allowed.
With regard to the question of tbo disposal of the military' touraomeut surplus, Mr Justice Conolly to-day recorded on order for vhe mclusion of Mr Allom, Secretary of the Queen's Statue Committee, as one of the defendants, and for the other prc-ceedings to stand over till his return from Gisborne.
GISBORNE, February 7. Argument lias been concluded in the Vahdation Court on the motion with reference to Messrs Carroll and Wi Pere. Tho Judge reserved his decision. STRATFORD, February 7.
In a test case brought to decide whether the local rifle range was safe, the Stipendiary Magistrate imposed a fine of Is. He condemned the range in scathing terms, and said it was a constant source of danger, and detrimental to property in the vicinity, and that no reasonable expenditure could males it safe. The club will lose heavily by the decision, as they have already spent large sums on the range. WELLINGTON, February 7. The missing seaman from the ship Och* tertyre has made, his whereabouts known, having reached shore safely. NELSON, February 7. A man named Emanuel Brain lias been misaing from town sanco Friday. An active search has been continued, and*there is little hopo now of discovering him alive. OAMARU, February 7. At a meeting'of the two local Bowling Clubs to-night, it was decided to hold the annual bowling tournament at Easter.
