FIRES.
(PBESS ASSOCIATION TELKGKAMS.) : WELLINGTON February 6. , Two shops on Lambton Quay, one ciccupied by J. Stephen, fancy goods dealer, and the other empty, were gutted by fire last " night. A third, occupied by Boot, cori- , fectioner, was partially damaged. The fire obtained a good hold, but the buildings were of brick, and thus confined it. It broke out again after midnight, but was subdued _t onpe. The buildings belonged to Mr Jacpb J, Joseph, and were insured in the Commercial Union for £2000, Stephen waa insured for £700 in tbe Magdeburg, and Boot for £100 in the Man-cl-QSter. GREYMOUTH, February 6. Two fires occurred here last night. A < cottage was burnt to the ground, and the second fire was in Schaefs furniture store, Mawkera quay. It. was totally destroyed, and the fire extended to the Wharf Hotel on one side and to P. Ingail's store on the other. Both places were almost destroyed/ The brigade work«u splendidly. The damage ' was much in excess of the insurances, which are:—Wharf Hotel, North German, £260; Northern £100,' Imperial £300, Sun £200, Phoenix £100, Alliance £200, and furniture / £100 and stock £100 in the Phoenix. Schaef £200 on stock, £100 on building, and £300 on' photo appliances in the Phoenix, half of tbe amount being reinsured. Ingail's building £100, and stock £200 in Commercial.
