WELLINGTON.
Wellington, January 3G\ The senior matches begun the previous week—Midland v Phoenix and Wellington A v Wellington B—were continued on j Saturday. The most noticeable feature of '"■ these weekly contests is the unvarying per- v sistency with which the erstwhile "cracks? fail to come off. Saturday's games were no exception, Holdship and Williams achieving an 0 and a 1 respectively, while Ken Tucker, also a reliable bat last season) had a very short life. On No. 1 wicket Midland, with two out for 23, put up 150 runs, just 40 behind the Phcenix. Quoe (42) batted well, as die*. Hickson (23), Stephenson (35), Gardiner (13), and Best (13). The latter, formerly an Otago rep., made his first appearance on Wellington wickets, and promises to be a decided acquisition to the Midland. On the Phcenix going in for their second innings, they lost five wickets for 21 in almost as many minutes, when Waters (a rather luckily-made 60 not out), assisted by Wallace (19), and Roberts (16) carried 1 the score to 113 for eight wickets at the call of time.
On No. 2 wicket, the Wellington B—rejpmjng jwith": eight out for, Sonera disposed of for 122, or 24 ahead of Wellington A. Stock, who was not out 33, Increased his total to 47. The A team, in their second innings; made 195.' Gore contributed a nicely-played 65, O'Sullivan 54, B. Weybourne 31, Moon 19. Pearoe, for the B. team, took four wickets for 25 runs. At the end of the day the B.s had lost three wickets for 16 in their second innings. In some of the junior, events'there was a great discrepancy in the scoring. The Rivals, playing the Petone, made 194; the latter all out for 31. In Qxe match Wellington Second v Phamix, the latter scored 215, their opponents only totalling 55, of which one man (Dunlop) made 42 not out.
