The popular impression is that the only people in New Zealand who live under a system of "no license" are the people of the now famous Clutha district, but a reference to the statistics for 1896 discloses the fact that there are no fewer than six counties and twelve boroughs in the colony where there are no Heensed houses for the sale of liquor. The following are the names of the j districts with the populations of each: — ' Counties. ' Population. Kawhia " ... »•• 598 West Taupo , 156 Soun\_3 .., -. 747 Cheviot ... ... 1.042 Clutha 6,564 Stewart Island — 244 Total ... 9,351 Boroughs. In Birkenhead an attempt was made, but the protest of the people was so prompt and vigorous that the movement was 'abamdoßsd, and we know how strongly the people of Linwood protested when the planting of an hotel in their district was spoken of. Moderates, drinkers, and total abstainers standing shoulder to shoulder to keep a great source of misery aiiid wretchedness from being sold in their midst.
