NORTH CANTERBURY BOARD OF EDUCATION.
TO THE EDITOR OT THE PRESS. Sir,—ln a report of the opening of the Ellesmere School it is said:—"The new. school erected by the Board is a corximodioua building, situated at Bethel's swamp, in the ' centre of a rich agricultural district, that MTTST SOON BE THICKLY POPULATED." The emphasis is mine. I am informed that at present the nearest house is a mile distant. How, then, is the population.to be brought there? By the present large blocks being cut up and sold? Will the fact that a school is there increase the value of this land when it is sold? Who will benefitby this increase, if any? Has' the Board rightly spent its money in erecting a "commodious building" in anticipation of population. A little while ago the Board decided not to erect a school at Fairfield until the place was more thickly populated. , Why this distinction? Why make fish of one and flesh of another? The question, sir, I think is of sufficient importance for you to draw attention to through your editorial columns. —Yours, &c, JUSTICE.
