ROAD BOARDS
♦ ELLESMERE. The Ellesmere Road Board met at Leeston on the Ist insfc. Present —Messrs W. McMillan (chairman), R. Lochhead, W. Nixon, John Gilbert, and James Stony. Correspondence was received from Selwyn County Council, requesting the Board to take charge lof timber at the new Selwyn bridge.- A | ratepayer wrote, asking for permission to graze cows on the public road. The application was refused. The Land and In} come Tax Department wrote, advising that the sum of £>t5 Is 2d had been paid to the credit of the Board as subsidy to rates for .1896-7-and 1897-8, and- the Receiver of Land Revenue advised payment of £16 4s Id ©n account of thirds. A petition was received from seven ratepayers, asking for the. reforming of McGuinness's and Cryer's roads. It was decided to inspect arid report at the next meeting. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote, asking for information regarding the buildings, churches, hotels, &c, in the district. It was decided that the information would be given if the Department paid for it. Messrs Johnson and Winchester saw the Board, asking for improvements on Johnson's road. The Board advised petitioners to arrange for the improvement of the drainage of the land, so as,to allow the road being put iri order. It was decided to call for tenders for cleaning out side channels and for maintaining the sides of roads in Leeston; also •to clean oUt slips iri'Ludieman's drain. Tha question of providing am outlet for the mouth of the Doyleston drain was held in'abeyance. Several repairs to roads were passed', and it was .also decided to put. sheep wires on the Selwyn bridge. The pay sheet, amounting to X 174 19s 9d, was passed for payment.
LINCOLN. The monthly meeting of this Board was held on Monday, the sth inst/ Present— Messrs'j; W. Overton (chairman), P. ley, H. Paterson, and Jas. Sinclair; .'An apology was tendered for the absence of Air Peryman. The Treasury notified that the sum of £22 10s 7d had been placed-to the Board's credit at the National" Bank, baing balance of subsidy on the rates collected for the year 1897-8. The Overseer's report was read. Resolved—That a new well be put down on reserve No. 214, and that all the occupiers of reserves be given notice to clear the reserves from gorse and broem. Mr Paterson proposed, and Mr Sinclair seconded —"That the open crossing on the Prebbleton and Halswell roads he improved by the reduction of the grade on both sides.' This was agreed to.
