Correspondence was read as under:—From the Railway Reform League, asking for the subscription of the Chamber, which it was agreed to forward. From the Union Steamship Company, General Post Office, Wellington, and General Manager of Railways, re detention of the Melbourne steamer at th. Bluff. The Union Steamship Company stated that it would be possible for them to carry out the suggestion during the summer, but not during the winter. It was decided to communicate further with the Postmaster-General on the subject. From the Cheviot County Settlers' Association, asking che Chamber ito support the proposal for a railway to Cheviot. , It was decided that the Minister of Railways be urged to give effect as early as possible to the request of the Association that a detailed survey and estimate of the cost of extending the railway from Waipara to Cheviot should be made. The question of the Thursday half-holiday being extended to wholesale houses and offices was discussed, but no definite resolution was arrived at. It was suggested that Monday and Tuesday, 26th and 27th December, and Monday and Tuesday, 2nd and 3rd January, be observed as holidays. The meeting then adjourned.
