WELLINGTON LICENSING COMMITTEE.
(press assoctatiox telegram.) WELLINGTON, September 2. At the quarterly meeting of the Licensing committee, to-day, a report was read from the police, complaining of the alarm bell which is in use at the Ranfurly Hotel. The report stated that on account of this means of signalling, the police could not gain admittance to the hotel without the occupants being made aware of their approach. Mr Skcrrett, who appeared for the licensee, Mr Crossey, denied the jurisdiction of the committee to go into the matter at tbe quarterly meeting. He deprecated hotelkeepers being harassed in this manner, and contended that the proper course would have been for the police to lay an information and attempt to prove their accusations. The bell had been removed as soon as Mr Crossey knew it was objected to. MiKenny said there was no application before the committee with regard to the license, and he did not sac that "the committee could do anything, at the same time he thanked the police for -taking the report.
