"The Silver King" was repeated at the Theatre Royal last night by the Constance Hardie Company, and went as well as on ■the previous evening. The audience was a fairly large one. To-night " Little Lord Faunltle'roy" will be repeated for the last time. The prices have also been altered to 2s and Is. On Monday night" East Lynne'* will be played. '* The first St. John Ambulance Association lecture of the Home Hygiene course to men was given last night by Dr. Neale at the City Council rooms. The second lecture will be on Friday next. Pupils joining then will be in time to qualify for examination. A meeting of the Chrysanthemum Society was held in the rooms of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association. In the absence of Dr. Irving, the president of the society, Mr Anstey was voted to the chair. Mr N. L. D. Smith gave an address on "The cultivation of the chrysanthemum." The address was a very practical and interesting one, mainly on the lines of advice to beginners in the growing of the Qneen of autumn flowers. At the conclusion Mr Smith was thanked for his many valuable hints. A very pleasant ball was given last night in the Art Gallery in connection with the Linwood Quadrille Assembly. There was a good attendance, the room being fall. Mr T. Williams acted as pianist and Mr T. Glen as M.C. The Socialist Church has decided to hold indoor meetings only on the first Thursday of each month, and open air meetings on the other Thursdays. A motion was passed at the last meeting approving of the proposal for a general disarmament of European nations. At a meeting of the Prohibition League correspondence was received from Inspector Broham stating that the police had made enquiries as to where the [man lately found dead had been supplied with liquor. At a meeting of the Kaiapoi Mutual Improvement Society on Thursday evening, an able paper was read by Mrs J. P. Armitage on " Woman: her position, past, S resentand future," and an interesting iscussion followed. The President (Rev. P. W. Fairclough) questioned whether any of the male members of the Society could have written such an able paper. , An enjoyable social was held in the Druids' Hall. Ohoka, on Monday last, to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Marshall, who are tawing the district. Mr Walters (the

Messrs Cruden, Grigg and Fairclough spoke highly of Mr 1 and Mrs Marshall's devotedness to Church work in the district, and Messrs Wright, Evans, Chatterfcon and Clothier expressed the general regret at their departure.
